Every May, streets across the Philippines burst with color as towns and barangays hold Flores de Mayo celebrations. At the heart of this festivity is the Sagala — a grand procession of young women dressed in stunning gowns, portraying queens and virtues in a visual spectacle that’s both religious and cultural.

The History Behind Sagala

The Sagala, also known as the Santacruzan, dates back to the Spanish colonial period. It commemorates the legendary search of Reyna Elena and her son, Emperor Constantine, for the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. Over time, the celebration evolved into a uniquely Filipino tradition that blends Catholic devotion with pageantry.

Traditionally held on the last day of May, the Sagala is now a much-anticipated event in many towns and cities across the country, especially in Laguna and other parts of Southern Luzon.

How Sagala Is Celebrated Today

Weeks before the event, barangays and parishes begin preparations — selecting sagalas (female participants), assigning roles, rehearsing the parade route, and, of course, choosing the perfect gowns. The procession typically starts in the late afternoon and winds through main roads before culminating in the town plaza or church grounds.

Each sagala represents a figure — from biblical queens like Reyna Esther, Reyna Judith, and Reyna Elena, to virtues like Reyna Fe (Faith), Reyna Esperanza (Hope), and Reyna Caridad (Charity). These roles often dictate the style and grandeur of each gown.

To add excitement, some communities host friendly competitions during or after the procession:

Winning or not, the Sagala is a cherished moment — a celebration of femininity, heritage, and community.

The Meaning Behind the Moment

More than just a parade, the Sagala is a rite of passage for many young Filipinas — often their first time wearing a formal gown and participating in a community celebration. It’s a moment where culture, faith, and beauty come together.

One of our team members at the shop often shares her memory of her own Sagala. She recalls walking down the flower-lined streets of her hometown in Laguna, wearing a borrowed gown two sizes too big — lovingly pinned in place by her lola. It wasn’t the fanciest dress, but she says the feeling of being part of something so beautiful and deeply rooted in tradition stayed with her for life. That memory, she says, is what fuels her love for helping others look and feel their best during this cherished time.

Whether you’re a proud parent, a first-time Reyna Elena, or simply admiring the elegance of it all, the Sagala is a reminder of how Filipino traditions continue to bloom year after year.
